Your garage has the vehicle. GEM provides remote ECU programming and coding support for eligible UK trade jobs. We confirm the procedure, equipment and authorisation before arranging a session.

When a module replacement or programming job falls outside your normal capability, ask GEM to assess it before turning it away or promising a result. An eligible remote job keeps the vehicle at your workshop, with a local technician available to prepare it and complete the agreed checks.

Submit the exact required operation and diagnostic findings. Not every procedure, fault or vehicle is suitable for remote delivery.

GEM confirms the approved remote workflow and session arrangements with your workshop. A technician must be available locally; no particular remote-access application is promised here.
5. Complete the supported procedure
GEM carries out the agreed programming or coding where the technical conditions and required authorisations are met.
6. Verify and agree the next steps
Review the programming result, module communication and fault status where possible. The workshop completes any agreed physical or in-vehicle checks.
What will my garage need?
Requirements vary by job. Typical requirements may include:
- The vehicle at your workshop and a technician available throughout the agreed session.
- A suitable Windows computer where required and reliable internet at the vehicle.
- A diagnostic or J2534/pass-through interface confirmed for the specific procedure.
- Suitable vehicle battery support and stable communication.
- The correct replacement module installed where the procedure requires it.
Do not purchase equipment specifically for a job until GEM has confirmed compatibility and requirements.

For many manufacturer programming procedures, a compatible diagnostic or pass-through interface connects the vehicle to a local computer. GEM then uses the agreed remote workflow and appropriate systems where available. The interface, its software and the manufacturer procedure must work together; not every J2534 device supports every job.
Manufacturer compatibility varies
Send the vehicle, module and required operation and we will confirm whether the job can be supported remotely. Local OEM experience does not establish remote availability for every brand, model or protected function.

Which GEM service do I need?
1. Can the module be posted?
Postal service is the preferred route for supported cloning, data transfer, repair and bench work. Confirm the module and procedure before dispatch.

Programming expectations
Compatibility must be confirmed before quotation and a session. Vehicle and module condition, pre-existing faults, stable power and communication can affect the work. Programming cannot repair underlying hardware or network faults. Some manufacturer procedures need additional authorisation; proof of ownership, identity or authority to act may be required through arrangements agreed with GEM.

Questions from garages
Can you remotely program any vehicle?
No. The manufacturer, model year, control unit, requested operation, vehicle condition, interface, connection and available permissions all affect eligibility. Submit the job before arranging a session.
What diagnostic interface do I need?
The interface must suit the specific manufacturer procedure and remote workflow. Send its make and model, including any J2534/pass-through or manufacturer interface details. Selection of an interface category does not confirm compatibility.
Do I need a battery support unit?
Stable vehicle voltage is commonly important during programming. GEM confirms the required battery support and power setup for the agreed job before a session is arranged.
Can you program a used ECU remotely?
Sometimes another route is needed. Used modules vary: some require supported cloning, resetting or data transfer, and some cannot be reused. Have the original and donor identities checked before purchase; remote programming is not a universal solution.
Can private customers use remote programming?
This service is primarily for automotive trade customers with the vehicle, suitable equipment and a technician available. Private customers can request advice about UK-wide postal work, remote support through their garage, or selected local mobile/on-site services by arrangement.
Can you connect to my diagnostic tablet?
Do not assume a tablet or its interface supports the required workflow. Send the exact equipment model and proposed job. GEM confirms whether a suitable computer and interface arrangement is available.
Do I need manufacturer software?
There is no universal setup. GEM confirms the appropriate software, subscriptions, permissions and local equipment requirements for an eligible job. Do not send account passwords or purchase subscriptions before this is agreed.
What if the job cannot be performed remotely?
If remote programming is not appropriate, GEM will advise whether postal module service, selected mobile/on-site support or another repair route is suitable. A compatibility enquiry does not guarantee a remote procedure or successful recovery.
How much does a remote session cost?
Request a quote after compatibility assessment. The procedure, module, software requirements and complexity affect the quotation. No universal session price or automatic booking is offered.
